Our Story
At Civitas Africa Center for Social Protection and Development, we believe that lasting change begins with people themselves. Our work is not about imposing solutions, but about recognising communities as knowledge holders, scientists of their own survival, and architects of their own futures.
We draw inspiration from citizen-driven and people-centred approaches, where local voices are central to understanding challenges and shaping responses. Every programme we design — from mental health and psychosocial support delivered through community-based psychosocial approaches (CBPS) to livelihoods, protection, and access to justice — begins with listening, dialogue, and co-creation. Communities are not mere "beneficiaries"; they are our partners and primary protagonists.
Our vision is grounded in social justice: dismantling the structural drivers of inequality, exclusion, and despair while nurturing solidarity, dignity, and hope. We believe in moving beyond one-size-fits-all solutions toward a pluriverse of possibilities, where diverse ways of knowing, healing, and thriving coexist beautifully.

VISION
A vibrant and equal world where displaced and underserved communities reclaim dignity, protection, and opportunity. Grounded in positive and transformative community knowledge, collective resilience, and relational ways of living, they are empowered through community-based mental health and psychosocial support, digital education, interconnected dimensions of justice that affect displaced and underserved communities, livelihoods, health, climate action, and innovation to shape their own destiny. Rooted in the belief that many worlds can coexist, these communities become creators of new possibilities and drivers of transformative change across Africa and beyond.
MISSION
Our mission is to empower displaced and underserved communities to reclaim dignity and agency. We build resilience through community-based mental health and psychosocial support, complemented by multisectoral protection in digital education, health initiatives, Climate Action & sustainable livelihoods, and social justice. By centering co-creation and citizen science, we partner with communities to design solutions, drive climate action, and lead transformative change across Africa and beyond.
Our Key Milestones & History
CIVITAS AFRICA established its core team and roots in Uganda, conducting extensive citizen science and co-creation dialogues with displaced and underserved communities to identify protection gaps.
Formally obtained official NGO Uganda registrations and operational permits. Successfully rolled out our hallmark community-based psychosocial approaches (CBPS) focusing on MHPSS and suicide prevention programs.
Expanded multisectoral programs to touch over 50,000+ lives. Partnered with technical and academic institutions to integrate digital educational infrastructures, climate-smart agriculture solutions, and refugee advocacy networks.
Pioneering transcultural field operations, scaling digital educational access models like BrightBox in locations like Bidibidi, and expanding community-driven policy research models across broader regions in Africa.
